'Then one day a man, Sergeant-Major William Kennedy, arrived
with a carbide flare and a red paint pot and orders to begin a
survey. He scrambled through the outcroppings on all fours and
worked his way into the eerie gloom. As he went he left paint
daubs to guide him through the maze.'
