The Underground Factories were planned in haste and panic and propelled to reality by Lord Beaverbrook.

Spring Quarry, designed as a dispersal factory for the Bristol Aircraft Company, was the greatest and during its short life cost the tax payer £20,000,000.

Spring Quarry as it was in February 1942 showing the area that was to become 'Burlington' during the Cold War. Note the position of Box Tunnel which runs along the northern edge of the quarry.
